Voices: Fleeing Uganda’s rebels

Civilians in southern Sudan who have fled renewed attacks by Ugandan rebels have told aid agency World Vision about their experiences.

The Lord’s Resistance Army rebels use their jungle bases in northern Democratic Republic of Congo to launch incursions across poorly defended borders.

Abducted by the LRA and freed after two days; fled to Makpandu Refugee Camp

I was at school when the LRA attacked our village. I was captured during the attack and forced to carry a sack of salt as we moved deep into the forest.
When we crossed river Duru, the LRA killed two people.

As we continued, we met an old man. They stopped him and cut off his head with a machete.

Two days later I was released with another boy on account of being a student.

The LRA is still attacking people; they could also attack us here in the camp.

Nine-year-old sister abducted by LRA; fled to Yambio town

Life here is very hard. We work on farms of residents to get money or food.
We cannot go back to our farms to get food because LRA is there. Only a person who wants to die can think of going back.

We still hear of LRA movements.

Maybe they can even attack us here. The LRA avoids where the army is and attacks unprotected areas.

Brother killed by LRA; fled to Makpandu Refugee Camp

The LRA has been attacking people around the camp. We are not safe in this camp.
The LRA are people who are always moving. They can come anytime.

I trust that God will be with us and nothing bad will happen to us.

JULIANA MARIO, 25, SUDANESE

LRA killed her father and abducted her mother; fled to Yambio town

I wanted to return home to collect some food, but I cannot go because the LRA is there and they can kill me.
I also fear that they may also attack us here.

The LRA should be chased away so that we can return home.

MINISARE KELIOP, 21, SUDANESE

Brother killed by LRA; fled to Yambio town

Some of the people that I left behind have been killed by the LRA.
Right now my biggest problem here is food, but sometimes when I hear of the news of LRA attacks on other areas, I feel insecure.

I probably will not return home until the LRA is eliminated.

MBIKAMBOLI ELIZE MITONA, 24, CONGOLESE

Uncle killed by LRA; fled to Makpandu Refugee Camp

I am not sure whether the LRA will attack us here in the camp or not.

We have policemen around.

Maybe when the LRA comes, they can call UN to take us to a safe place.
